PODAI: PAINTING FROM WEST AFRICA

Podai painting is the art of the women of the Loma people in Guinea. It fascinates with abstract, masterfully composed images with a completely independent visual language based on the proportions of the human body. Originally, Podai is body painting. House walls are also sometimes decorated with Podai motifs.

Karl-Heinz Krieg got to know Podai painting by chance in 1987 when he was crossing the Loma area. He returned there four times. From 1987 to 1996 he worked with 41 female artists. They created numerous paintings on paper, hardboard and large-format cotton sheets to preserve their art. In addition, numerous interviews, photos, film and music recordings document the culture that Podai produced.

Podai painting was exhibited at the Hamburgischen Museum für Völkerkunde in 1995 and at the museum kunst palast in Düsseldorf in 2003.

Works by Kolouma Sovogis were exhibited in 2000 at the Cinquième biennale d'art contemporain de Lyon in France.
